The BYD Sealion 6 is a fuel-efficient car. But that’s just one thing. Another important question to ask is: “How safe is it?”

Very. At least that’s what the results of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program’s (ANCAP) recent tests showed. The range-extended hybrid made its way to Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, and now it’s earned five stars for safety from the ANCAP.

Breaking down the Sealion 6’s scores, it yielded an 88% safety rating for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection, 83% for vulnerable road user protection, and 75% for safety assist.

Of note, front passengers were well protected in frontal-offset, full-width frontal, side impact, oblique-pole, and far-side impact tests. Whiplash protection was good for front passengers but poor for rear passengers.

There was also good protection for children at the back in front and side dynamic tests. The Sealion 6 also got a perfect score for restraint installation for children but lacked a bit in terms of on-board safety features.

“The BYD stable continues to offer high levels of safety to its customers, with the Sealion 6 now joining the Dolphin, Seal, and Atto 3 as five-star vehicles,” said ANCAP chief executive officer Carla Hoorweg.
