Chinese automakers have been making a lot of noise in the pickup segment lately. From BYD, there’s the upcoming Shark, while some current offerings include the Foton Tunland, GWM Canon, and JMC Grand Avenue.

Just about every major player from the Chinese automotive industry has a pickup to offer. However, Chery, one of China’s ‘Big Four’ doesn’t have a contender in that class.

But that might soon change. It was previously reported that Chery has plans to build a Hilux-Ranger competitor. Per Motor1 Brasil, it has been confirmed by the company that it is coming soon. There is no exact target date just yet, but it’s something to expect from company. The rumor mill suggests it will make its world premier in 2025.

There’s more, too. To boost its credentials, Chery will build the truck on a body on frame chassis like a true pickup. Its main target? The Hilux and Ranger, to name a few.

Powertrains are a mystery at the moment. That said, a diesel is a given should it want to grab sales from the segment’s leaders. However, as the Chinese market tends to shy away from diesels, turbo petrols and electrified powertrains are also expected.

Aside from the pickup, Chery also confirmed plans of building a pickup platform vehicle. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Should that plan push through, we might just see a combo like the Hilux and Fortuner from the Chinese automaker.
