After the refreshed Ford EcoSport made its debut in North America, Asia Pacific and South America, and had a cameo appearance in the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 it’s finally ready for Europe.
The American carmaker has just unveiled online its refreshed 2018 EcoSport for the European market. Its general styling is identical to the other global models. This means you get the same high-mounted trapezoidal grille, reshaped headlights with LED daytime running lights, and a more substantial rear bumper. Like before, buyers can order the available swing-gate-mounted spare tire if desired. Inside, it gets the same restyled dashboard with the new gauge cluster and a tablet-like floating infotainment screen.
For the first time ever, the EcoSport will get the sporty ST-Line variant. Now what sets this variant apart from the rest? It gets unique exterior touches like Ford performance-inspired front lower bumper, rear bumper, skirts, black roofrails, dark headlight bezels and sharp-looking 17-inch Dark Tarnish alloys. A standard contrasting painted roof and side mirrors complete the look. It gets a predominantly black interior, which features partial leather seats with red stitching, a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, scuff plates, and stainless steel pedals.
This smart crossover gets Ford’s latest SYNC 3 system, which features connectivity systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are 8-inch and 6.5-inch touchscreens offered, while lower spec variants get a 4.5-inch color screen. A premium B&O Play sound system is now available. Its seven airbags, blind spot information system and roll stability control keep occupants safe. Ford’s baby CUV finally gets cruise control with adjustable speed limiter and a reversing camera.
This refreshed EcoSport’s suspension, steering and stability control have been tuned for the European market. The ST-Line variant has been tuned to deliver even sportier driving dynamics.
At launch, the European EcoSport will be offered with a 99hp 1.5-liter TDCi diesel engine and two 1.0-liter gasoline EcoBoost mills producing 123hp and 138hp. In mid-2018, it will be joined by a 123hp 1.5-liter EcoBlue oil-burner and a lower output 99hp 1.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline unit. A six-speed manual comes as standard, while the 125hp 1.0 EcoBoost can be had with a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Like before, front-wheel drive is standard but buyers can now order Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, which is exclusively paired to the EcoBlue motor. Southeast Asian models will most likely stick to gasoline powerplants.
The 2018 EcoSport for Europe will be manufactured at Ford’s upgraded plant in Craiova, Romania. It will hit European showrooms later this year. Hopefully something similar to the sporty Euro-flavored EcoSport ST-Line makes it to our shores someday.
