Ford has made it clear that it’s pouring all its resources on making crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. Okay, there’s the Mustang, but for the most part, the American automaker has all but abandoned the sedan, hatchback, and wagon segments.
The Focus was pretty much the final mainstream Ford passenger car that’s not high off the ground. Production of what was once one of Europe’s best-selling car will wrap up by November 2025 with no successor in sight. However, there are still two markets that, surprisingly, still has a sedan on offer.

If you live in the Middle East or China, it might be the final opportunity for you to buy a Ford sedan. A midsize sedan, to be exact. For those living outside those markets, say hello to the Ford Mondeo and Taurus.

No, they’re not separate models. They’re literally the same car with different names for the said markets. Both come from the Ford-Changan plant in Chongquing. For those unfamiliar with their names, the Mondeo and Taurus were Ford’s top-selling sedans from Europe and the US.

The new Ford Taurus and Mondeo ride on a stretched Ford Focus platform. It may look like a heavy facelift of the last Continental Mondeo and Ford Fusion, but it’s actually on a totally new chassis. You can color us surprised given that the midsize sedan market is practically a niche in most part of the world.
It’s nominally a midsize sedan, but its dimensions suggest otherwise. It measures 4,935mm long, 1,875mm wide, 1,498mm tall, with a lengthy wheelbase of 2,945mm. To put that into perspective, the Mondeo and Taurus’ wheelbase is even longer than that of the iconic Crown Victoria.

There are three powertrain options available for the Mondeo and Taurus. It kicks off with a 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine that makes 188hp and 258Nm, while higher trim levels boast a 2.0-liter turbo with 251hp and 393Nm. Of course, there’s a hybrid version that parts the 1.5-liter turbo with an electric motor. Combined output is rated at 205hp and 235Nm. Only the hybrid uses an e-CVT, while the rest shift with an eight-speed automatic.
As one would expect, there’s zero chance of it being sold outside China and the Middle East. Still, we’re rather pleased to find out that about 250,000 units have been sold since it was introduced in 2022. There’s some hope for this midsize sedan segment, then. Even if it’s not as strong as it once was.
