Geely made a lot of noise at the 2024 Thailand International Motor Expo with the regional debut of its all-electric crossover, the Geely EX5. After making its global appearance at Automechanika Frankfurt last September, the EX5 has been visiting several European markets, and eventually heading down under to the Australian market.

Finally arriving in the ASEAN region, Geely is expected to bring its BEV to Indonesia next. While there are no official announcements, perhaps the Philippines will be the next stop for the Geely EX5.

Geely’s EV takes some design notes from its Volvo counterpart, the EX30, and other popular electric crossovers and SUVs in the market. Its fascia takes a single panel and smoothens it around a long curve. Thin headlights then come between the bumper and its sloping hood.

Around the sides, the door handles are flushed into the body, further smoothening out its overall impression. Out back, the tailights and trunk door make an almost identical look to its probable main competitor, the BYD Atto 3.

Performance is similar to the Atto 3 as well, albeit slightly better. The Geely EX5 packs a 60.2kWh battery that powers a single motor powering the front axle. That then produces 218hp and 320Nm of torque. For reference, the Atto 3 makes 210hp and 310Nm of torque—not a world of difference, but more-than-welcome improvements.

Similarities continue when it comes to driving range. Geely claims a maximum range of 425km while the (smaller battery) Att0 3 has range of about 410km. Though we would really have to put the Geely EX5 through its paces to get a real sense of its range.

Where the Geely EX5 might have the BYD Atto 3 beat is in luxury. The EX5 is dressed in a modern, cream-colored cabin that actually looks more minimalist than BYD’s interior design profile (if that was even possible). Geely will be manufacturing the EX5 in two trims, with the ‘Max’ variant getting more interior additions. The base model, dubbed the ‘Pro,’ will essentially be a more stripped down version of the Max.

In the Thai market, the Geely EX5 Pro will be on sale for THB859,000 (P1.46 million) while the Max gets a THB949,000 (P1.61 million) price tag.
