On paper, Honda and Isuzu seem incompatible with each other. The prior is known for efficient, high-revving engines, while the latter has been specializing in diesels for about a century.

But times are changing, and electrification is the hot topic these days. Honda has been making solid efforts for decades. However, Isuzu has a lot of catching up to do. That's why the two brands have become perhaps the most unlikely bedfellows in recent history.

So, why did the two brands come together? It's all down to looking for zero emissions powertrains for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. But instead of relying on pure electric energy, Honda and Isuzu have chosen hydrogen as the power source.

Per Honda, the reason for choosing hydrogen was range, large load capacity, and quick refueling, all a must for long haul delivery and logistics. Fitted to a Giga prototype vehicle, its fuel-cell (FC) stack converts hydrogen into electricity to power the motor. A lithium-ion battery then serves as supplemental power for the electric motor. Speaking of the electric motor, the hydrogen-powered Giga doles out 429hp.

Honda and Isuzu have begun public testing of the hydrogen-powered Giga. Testing will run until September 2024, during which the companies will collect data and iron out technical issues. Should it be sorted out quickly, both automakers aim to release the technology by 2027.
