MIAS 2024: The new P2.738-M Hyundai Elantra N shows hot sedans aren’t dead

Long live the sport sedan

In an age of crossovers and SUVs, the sedan market is shrinking day by day. Whether it’s subcompact or full-size, more consumers would rather have something with five doors. We can’t blame them, of course. Those vehicles are inherently more practical.

The same goes for the high-performance market. We’re seeing more fast crossovers these days, and if one wants a fast car, it’ll either be a two-door or a hot hatch. Simply put, there aren't a lot of sports sedans out there unless it comes from Europe and a few exeptions from Japan.

But Hyundai wants to challenge that perception. At the 2024 Manila International Auto Show, the South Korean automaker has brought in its N Performance division arm in the Philippines. Its first car is none other than the Hyundai Elantra N.

It’s been a while since the local market got the Elantra. Well, it’s back with a bang because the N is the only way you’ll get it. We’re not complaining, though, as the hot sedan has some solid specs and numbers to back it up.

The Hyundai Elantra N is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It’s good for 276hp and 392Nm of torque and shifts with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. On top of that, there's a function called N Grin Shift that momentarily amps up the power to 286hp for 20sec. All that power is coursed through the front wheels.

Before you worry about potentially wayward handling because of all the torque going to the front, you'll be pleased to know that it comes with a limited-slip differential. On top of that, the Elantra N comes with a unique suspension arrangement that keeps planted on the road or on the race track. 19-inch rims and wide tires give the car extra grip, while Brembo brakes reels it in.

Like what you see? The Elantra N will set you back P2,738,000—not bad for a high-performance sedan with nearly 300hp.
