The world is no stranger to hybrid vehicles. We’ve heard of nameplates like the Chevrolet Volt, the Honda Insight and, of course, the Toyota Prius. Now, Hyundai is set to join the fray with its innovative Ioniq hybrid.

The sleek and sporty hatchback doesn’t just brag about premium looks, it also boasts cutting-edge technology. The body, for instance, is said to be much lighter than other hybrids. This is made possible by a combination of high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum. The former is employed on the more important crash zones where strength and protection are required, while the latter is used for places like the hood, the suspension and the tailgate.

The ingenious construction method continues to the platform. The battery is placed down low for a more balanced center of gravity. This aids in better handling and more efficient operation. It likewise gives the car a sportier driving characteristic on the open road.

The Ioniq is the first hybrid model to offer a choice of plug-in hybrid, electric and hybrid power in one vehicle. A 1.6-liter Kappa engine, developed specifically for the Ioniq, produces 105hp, while an electric motor supplements it with 43.5hp. Power is transferred to the drive wheels via a dual-clutch transmission, also made especially for this application. The gasoline motor is special in that it is designed with a split head and block for optimized cooling, along with 200-bar six-hole injectors for more efficient delivery of power and fuel. As for the lithium-ion polymer battery, it is designed for quicker charging and longer range.
