In case you missed it, the first-ever Hyundai Staria Hybrid made its world premiere recently. Aimed at being an alternative to the diesel model, it’s expected to be the most fuel efficient model in the Staria lineup.

Available in both passenger van and cargo configurations, the Staria Hybrid is set to go on sale in South Korea sometime in March 2024. To add more interest, Hyundai South Korea has published some of its fuel economy claims.

So, how did it do? Per the factory figures, the electrified Hyundai Staria can get up to 13km/L in the mixed cycle. Those numbers are based on the Cargo version on 17-inch wheels. On the other hand, the heavier 11-seat passenger van model does up to 12.6km/L, also under the same test cycle.

While there is a 0.4km/L deficit between the cargo and passenger variant, the latter is still better compared to its diesel-fed counterpart. For comparison, Hyundai claims 10.8km/L from its 2.2-liter turbodiesel-powered Staria. That’s an improvement of 1.8 km/L, and if you multiply that difference by its fuel tank capacity, that’s a substantial boost in range.

The Hyundai Staria Hybrid is a full hybrid that uses a 1.6-liter turbo paired an electric motor. Derived from the Santa Fe Hybrid, its engine produces 177hp and 265Nm of torque, while the motor produces 72hp and 304Nm of torque. That gives this van a combined power output of 242hp.

In South Korea, the Hyundai Staria Hybrid prices range from 35,130,000 won for basic Cargo variant to 36,530,000 for the top-spec model. In local currency, that’s approximately P1,481,000 to P1,540,000.

Will Hyundai Motor Philippines bring the gas-electric Staria to the country? We're keeping out fingers crossed for that. Given that the company is making noise about its electrification strategy, it might be safe to say that it's under consideration at the moment.
