It’s a proof of concept for now

The Isuzu D-Max is going electric. It’s not just a statement but it will soon be a reality. Set to be released in Europe by 2025, it will be offered for the rest of the world in the years after.

But for those who think that’s too much of a dramatic shift, Isuzu has another viable solution. Alongside the EV version is the mild-hybrid prototype. It’s a 'concept' of sorts for now, but there’s a good chance that it’ll reach showrooms eventually.

Isuzu D-Max MHEV POC

It’s dubbed the Isuzu D-Max MHEV POC, possibly stands for Proof of Concept. It looks like a response to the mild-hybrid Toyota Hilux that’s now available in some parts of the world. That said, the mild electrification isn’t applied to the range-topping model.

Instead, the 48v system is attached to the smaller engine. It’s mated to the 1.9-liter BluePower turbodiesel mill. Isuzu claims that the MHEV system adds a few more torque and horsepower, but it has yet to release the exact numbers. For reference, the standard 1.9-liter engine makes 148hp and 350Nm of torque.

From the outside, it’s nearly indistinguishable from the standard (facelifted) Isuzu D-Max. The MHEV POC is based upon what’s called the Hi-Lander dual-cab model, known locally as the LS. The only key distinguishing exterior market is a small badge on the tailgate.

So, what does Isuzu aim to achieve with the D-MAX MHEV? There’s the fuel economy benefit, of course, but the company aims to improve the pickup’s refinement as well. Lower CO2 emissions are also among the targets.

“We are in the process of surveying the market before determining further sales plans,” says Isuzu.
