Mazda has begun production of the all-new 2 subcompact hatchback at its Auto Alliance Thailand (AAT) plant in Rayong.

According to the Japanese carmaker, the Mazda 2 units that are currently being assembled are destined for the Australian market. The plant will also produce the model for ASEAN countries as well as for other markets in the Oceania region.

AAT is the second facility to produce the all-new Mazda 2, following the carmaker's Hofu plant in Japan, which kicked off the model's production in July. The car is also known as the Demio in Japan. A third plant located in Mexico is scheduled to start producing the model later this year.

"It is a huge and challenging task to start production of a new model at three different plants around the world in such quick succession," said Mazda Motor president and chief executive Masamichi Kogai. "We call Hofu Plant in Japan the mother plant, and we are committed to ensuring that vehicles produced in Thailand and Mexico for our customers around the world, are built to the same high quality standards as those in Japan."
