Mazda and Changan have unveiled their latest collaboration for the Chinese market: the Mazda EZ-6 Sports Edition. The EZ-6, also known as the Mazda 6e in European markets, was originally touted as a luxury sedan with two powertrain options: an extended-range EV (EREV) system or a fully-electric powerplant.

However, this new Sports Edition model nudges the EZ-6 out of the luxury segment and more into the electrified sports-sedan circle. Where the standard EZ-6 goes head to head with the Honda Accord, this version will likely eye the Honda Civic, or something like the BYD Seal Advanced, as a sparring partner.

At the time of writing, Mazda and Changan have not announced any changes to the powertrain options, making this a purely aesthetic overhaul. Those in China who opt for the EREV powertrain will get a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a 160kW rear motor. The brands claim that this version of EZ-6 can drive an estimated 1,301km on a fully charged battery and a full tank.

On the other hand, those who choose the fully electric setup will be propelled by a 190kW motor. A full charge should be good for 480km of driving.

Now to the good stuff. The looks of the EZ-6 Sports Edition are elevated by several accents and small details across the exterior that add up to a meaner-looking sedan. The brake calipers on each corner pop out in a new red color, while the fascia now sports a glowing Mazda logo.

The new 19-inch alloys and side skirts have been redone in a shiny black finish, which frankly adds a more luxurious vibe than sporty aesthetics. However, the rear spoiler provides the right amount of oomph, tying the exterior together.

In the cabin, the new alcantara seats are complemented by red stitching, which is also found on the steering wheel, to neatly complement those bright red calipers outside. The 14.5-inch infotainment display from the standard EZ-6 has been carried over, as well as the 14-speaker Sony audio system.

Like other Mazda-Changan releases, this will spend some time in China before venturing out into the world. Would you want to see this alongside the Mazda 6 wagon in the Philippine market?
