Mazda has subtly announced that a new gas-powered engine is currently in development. Based on the Japanese car company’s latest financial report, the gas-powered Skyactiv-Z engine will be rolling out in 2027.

The new engine will replace the Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X engines that are currently set in select Mazda vehicles—effectively streamlining all of Mazda’s gasoline powered vehicles into one engine. That sounds like a big bet.

If the gamble pays off, Mazda cars of 2027 will be running on a four-cylinder engine that is compliant with Euro 7 and USA LEV4/Tier 4 emission standards. The cleanliness and fuel efficiency of the Skyactiv-Z will be based on the Lamba One Combustion Method that (in theory) should equally balance the air-to-fuel ratio while the engine is running.

On top of a fuel-efficient car, manufacturing a single engine should also optimize the assembly process for gas-powered Mazda cars. This could give Mazda more breathing room and factory space to its hybrid and EV aspirations. Alongside the Skyactiv-Z, Mazda plans to debut a new proprietary BEV platform in 2027. As for the hybrids, Mazda has already tapped another giant in Toyota to supply a hybrid system to the current CX-50.

If all goes according to plan, the Skyactiv-Z could open up the doors for a new six-cylinder engine in the future.

In the financial report, Mazda teased a few new offerings, including the next generation CX-5 and a brand new electric crossover made in collaboration with Changan. It did not mention which new models would be installed with the Skyactiv-Z, but the odds are in the CX-5’s favor.
