The Mazda MX-5 has been the darling of weekend club racers for over 30 years. The folks from Hiroshima are well aware of that which explains the various special editions that they make for the little roadster. The current generation is no exception.
Now in its ninth year, Mazda is giving the MX-5 yet another special variant. However, things are different this time around as it will be a higher performance version to be launched under the Spirit Racing wing.

Dubbed the Mazda Spirit Racing RS, it incorporates he lessons learned from the company’s exploits in the Super Taikyu series. It’s a concept for now, but Mazda has confirmed that it will reach production soon. The company aims this model to be fun to drive from the city to the circuit.
Should the road going version look exactly the same as the concept, we can expect most of its exterior tweaks to make it to the showroom. At the front, there’s a deeper front apron with a red highlight, while the sides get side skirts. It then wears a set on Volk TE37 wheels wrapped in meaty Bridgestone tires.

There are several upgrades inside, too. Recaro seats with fixed backrests replace the stock seats, and there’s load of suede trim all over the place. It also comes with racing harnesses and smatterings of red highlights on the dash, door, steering wheel, and seats.
So far, there’s no mention if there’s extra power under the hood. That said, there is a different exhaust system, while the larger Brembo brakes is something we’d like to see in the production model. The lower ride height also hints serious changes under the chassis.

Mazda isn’t saying when exactly it will release the Spirit Racing RS. However, we’re expecting it to be a Japan-exclusive model.
