To manufacturers, if you want to sell a lot of cars in the Philippines, a truck-based midsize SUV is a must in the lineup. MG Philippines has taken that to heart and has done so by giving a preview of its Fortuner-fighter.

SUV shoppers, meet the MG D90. Emphasis on the word ‘preview’ here. It won’t be in showrooms just yet, but rest assured that it’s coming soon. If it looks familiar, it wears the Majestor name over in India.

As MG is part of the SAIC conglomerate, this model was originally badged as a Maxus. It appears to be a straight rebadge, too. Still, finally a midsize SUV from the brand, right?

Before you ask “how much?” the company has yet to reveal it. However, it did share some interesting details about it. There’s the sizable screens inside, power-adjustable driver’s seat, a sunroof, 360-degree cameras, and even optional captain’s chairs for the second row. We’re curious how many variants will be offered down the line.

More important, this SUV will be available with advanced driver-assist features including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keep assist.

As for the powertrain, shoppers in this segment will likely be relieved that it comes with a diesel engine. The MG D90 is powered by a 2.0-liter, twin-turbocharged mill that makes 215hp and 500Nm of torque. It then shifts with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For those feeling adventurous and actually wanting to take it off-road, you’ll be pleased to know that it has terrain select modes and a rear differential lock.

Price predictions? Given that MG undercuts the competition, we reckon it will be less expensive compared to the likes of the Ford Everest, Toyota Fortuner, and Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Under P2.5 million for the range-topping 4x4 variant with captain’s chairs? It’s not too far from reality.
