Rumors of a new Mitsubishi Pajero have been going around for some time now. In July 2024, reports from Japan suggested a 2027 debut for the next-generation model. According to those reports, the new Pajero will be built on the existing Outlander platform, dropping diesel propulsion entirely in favor of plug-in hybrid and gasoline powertrains—all while retaining the Pajero’s coveted four-wheel-drive system.
Since then, spy shots of a large Mitsubishi SUV have raised more excitement and speculation about the brand’s next release. From the pictures circulating online, the model is equipped with a live axle in place of an independent suspension, hinting at the makings of a new Pajero or even a Montero Sport.

And recently, NHK World Japan reported that Mitsubishi could roll out the new Pajero as early as December next year. According to the Japanese outlet, the carmaker is keen on releasing a new Pajero to boost overall sales, specifically in its home market. Assembly of the new Pajero could also be moved to Thailand, possibly to optimize costs and production volume. The report, however, did not mention anything about a global release.

In the meantime, Mitsubishi has its hands full with the all-new Destinator, which is set to hit the Philippine market in the near future—if it isn’t already here yet. The brand has also just revamped the Xpander, integrating the new Mitsubishi design language and adding a slew of tech updates.
To an extent, these new designs follow the boxy, tall, and modernized look of the spied SUV that could be the new Pajero. This could indicate that Mitsubishi is also trying to reach those with executive-styled tastes, while still promoting the model’s prowess as an off-roader—much like the new Nissan Patrol and the Toyota Land Cruiser.
