Using fire isn’t the best way to get rid of bugs in your car

That’s not gone well

How would you react if you saw a bug in your car? Some would try to swat it away, while others would try to kill it with one swift whack. But for one Australian motorist, he opted for an unorthodox method.

You’ve probably seen memes of people setting their houses on fire just to kill a spider. Now, the meme has become reality with a man who accidentally set his Nissan Pathfinder on fire to do the same thing.

There aren’t a lot of details at the moment, but there is an interesting bit of radio chatter from emergency services. It simply said “Set the car on fire, trying to kill a spider…I have no further details, over.”

It’s understandable that a spider (presumably a big one) can strike fear and panic to anyone that sees it. That said, setting it on fire isn’t the most effective or safest way to deal with the situation. It’s unclear how the driver tried setting the spider on fire, but all we can say is he got a lot more than he bargained for.

Australian motoring publication CarExpert also reported, “It’s unclear if the 57-year-old driver was injured during the fire or if he was able to successfully kill the spider.” Australian humor, perhaps? Either way, the driver now has a smouldering wreck of a Nissan Pathfinder and quite some explaining to do.

So, how does one get rid of bugs in a car? For starters, don’t panic if you see one. Yes, it’s hard to maintain composure if that cockroach starts flying, but we’d rather you pull over first and deal with the insect/arachnid/multi-legged creature while stationary.

You can give your car a quick wash and a vacuum, or you can use citronella-based insect repellants. Only use bait and insecticides as a last resort solution.

Oh, and we’ll repeat it again, please don’t use fire to drive bugs out. Besides, try explaining to your insurance that you (accidentally) set your car ablaze because of bugs in there.
