Nissan Philippines today launched the refreshed Almera and its two new variants--one placed above the previous top-of-the-line edition, and another aimed at those looking for the best value for money in the competitive subcompact segment.

The new range-topping 1.5L VL AT Almera features premium leather seats and leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. No changes have been made to the engine, but anyone looking for a more refined cabin experience in this class might be willing to shell out the asking price for this variant.

Perhaps the bigger news is the addition of the much-cheaper 1.2L MT variant, powered by a 1.2-liter DOHC CVT engine rated at 78hp. It may not pack a lot of horses, but it should be more than enough for city motoring.

The entire Almera lineup will now come with a redesigned front end made prominent by a new set of boomerang-shaped headlights, a bolder front grille, and chrome accents. The interior features an all-new central cluster layout with a piano-black finish, as well as numerous cupholders and compartments.

Nissan Philippines general manager for marketing SJ Huh said that while a lot of subcompacts are focusing on enticing millennials, the Almera is looking at the bigger picture. "We're not going by the age of our customers, but by the attitude," the Korean executive explained. "This car can offer practicality and very good value. We want to target people who are looking for value for money. Most of them are hard-working and are trying to move up, very responsible and looking after their kids and family."

The new Almera is available in Brilliant Silver, Alpine White, Bluish Black and Titanium Gray. Will the two new variants be enough to sell customers on the Almera's practicality and value? At these prices, you can't help but stop to consider your options.
