It was inevitable, but it’s big news, nonetheless. After 18 years of production. The last batches of the Nissan GT-R are set to roll out soon. The order books have been closed, and it’s all for the Japanese market.

And with that, Nissan has officially closed the chapter on its long-running R35 GT-R. It’s an end of an era, indeed, and it’ll be a while before we see a successor.

“We have received many orders for the GT-R and have now finished accepting orders for the planned production quantity. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for their support since its release in 2007,” read a statement from Nissan.

The soon to be outgoing R35 Nissan GT-R was, in itself, a revival of sorts. Its predecessor, the R34 Skyline GT-R was discontinued a few years before an all-new generation came out. One can say that the world had a collective sigh of relief when the R35 came out, but it’s fair to say that no one thought its production would last this long.

To put things into perspective, the production run of the R35 Nissan GT-R is longer than that of the R32, R33, and R34…combined. The GT-Rs of the ‘90s and early ’00s ran for a total of 13 years, 14 years if you include the ultra limited-run R34 Z-Tune from 2005.

Here’s a crazier stat for you: If you include the vintage GT-Rs from the late-‘60s to early-’70s, the total production length of all previous models are still just the same as this R35 at 18 years.

With R35 production wrapped up, when can we expect the next-generation GT-R? It’s still a huge question mark at the moment, especially given Nissan’s current situation. There’s the Hyper Force Concept we saw back in 2023 that gave us a glimpse of things to come, but that’s not set in stone yet.
