The Nissan Terra may be a smash hit in the Philippines, but sales have been sluggish elsewhere. Reports of its impending demise have been circulating, and given the current situation, it seems likely to happen.
But now, it seems like there’s a glimmer of hope for the truck-based SUV. Over in the US, it has been discovered that a trademark for the name Xterra has cropped up. Part of the revival plan, perhaps?

The Xterra first came about in 1999 for the 2000 model year. Since then, it was based on the Frontier (and later, Navara) but discontinued in 2015 spanning two generations. It’s the formula that the Terra follows, and the current model is known as the Xterra in the Middle East.

With the 4x4 market stronger than ever, it’s possible that Nissan could keep the Terra hanging around for longer. Nissan has also expressed its desire to build a ‘serious truck’ for the future. With that, it’s possible that the next-gen Terra, if it’s still happening, could have a shift in positioning.

An all-new Nissan Terra is still possible given its alliance with Mitsubishi Motors. The company could use the same platform as the next-generation Montero Sport and start from there. But we go back again to the brand’s current state.
Nissan isn’t in great shape at the moment and will have to rationalize its lineup. Whether it still has a midsize SUV in its future is up for debate given current sales, but it’s good to know that the company is, at the very least, considering it.
