We often complain about ‘slim pickings’ in our market when it comes to the ‘fun’ models, but the truth is, we’re actually lucky as far as our options go. We do have the Toyota GR Yaris here, for example, and we even got it early on at that. That’s something...right?
Right. But would it be wrong to wish for more? Say, the GR Corolla? If Toyota’s going to bring more GR Yarises to our market, anyway, it might as well complete the Gazoo Racing lineup, too.

Now, we’re not just saying all these things out of the blue. Toyota did finally launch the GR Corolla in ASEAN last year, after all, so we have good reason here. And besides, we’ve heard through the grapevine that Toyota Motor Philippines could be bringing in the hot hatch Corolla next year.

Big news, right? Well, not yet. These are just rumors, so take them with a grain of salt. But if you can’t help but get excited, we can’t blame you. The GR Corolla was supposed to be the car for the markets that don’t get the GR Yaris. We would be so lucky if we got both of them here.
For those of you who aren’t familiar, the GR Corolla is powered by a 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine pushing 300hp and 400Nm of torque. Of course we’re excited. Like its GR Yaris sibling, the GR Corolla gets the GR-Four all-wheel-drive system as standard. It now also comes as an automatic apart from the traditional six-speed manual.
If and when the GR Corolla does make it to the Philippines, we’re still not sure whether or not we’ll get both transmission options. We also don’t know if we’ll get the ‘hotter’ version that Toyota’s supposedly working on, or we’ll just get this recently facelifted model. In any case, we’ll keep you posted as soon as we get more updates.
