At the start of March, Toyota Motor Philippines surprised us with the launch of the new Toyota GR Yaris. And it wasn’t just a new model with some updates here and there—it’s the one with the automatic transmission.
Yes, an automatic gearbox on a GR Yaris. Coincidentally, this arrived alongside the Supra with the stick shift. And last weekend, were able to finally see it up close and personal at the first leg of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup at the Clark International Speedway.

In terms of aesthetics, the GR Yaris gets new-look bumpers that improve aerodynamics as well as engine and brake cooling. Inside, the dashboard has been tweaked for better ergonomics for the driver.

Under the hood, the GR Yaris still packs a familiar 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbopetrol that now puts out 276hp and 390Nm of torque. Not as powerful as Japan and Europe’s 300hp, 400Nm powertrain, but it’s still more powerful than the pre-update version.

The main highlight here is the automatic gearbox, of course, but the GR Yaris can still be had with a six-speed manual. As far as pricing goes, in case you missed it, the manual now comes at P3.391 million, while the automatic stickers for P3.55 million.
