Three years have passed since the second-generation Toyota GR86 made its world premiere. It’s an evolution of the past model, gaining more power and a sharper chassis along the way. Given that, Toyota reckoned now is a good time to introduce some updates to the sports coupe.
Set to be released in Japan by August 1, 2024, the GR86 for the 2025 model year gets a host of changes, mostly under the skin. Toyota hopes to further improve the coupe’s handling characteristics, particularly its on-limit dynamics.

For starters, the new Toyota GR86 gets new dampers with ‘ improved characteristics.’ It doesn’t say much, but it’s likely that the new parts have buttoned down the chassis to avoid skipping over bumpy tracks at speed.
Something more drivers might notice is the new steering tuning. The electronic power steering has been recalibrated and is claimed to offer more feel and feedback. Oh, and there’s a tire pressure monitoring system fitted standard now.

There are even improvements in the powertrain department. No, the cars don’t get extra power. The GR86 (and the Subaru BRZ) stick to the same 2.4-liter with 235hp and 250Nm of torque. However, the engine torque control has been modified to give a little more punch at the lower end of the rev band. It will be interesting to see how that pans out against the stopwatch.
A special edition model also joins the range. Per the usual, however, it’s a Japanese Domestic Market exclusive. Boo.

Dubbed the RZ Ridge Green Limited, it gets, er, a unique shade of dark green. It then receives a set of gold wheels, along with a black on brown interior finish with the variant name embroidered in there.
As mentioned, Japan gets it first but we can expect these updates to eventually make it to the local version.
