When was the last time you saw a nearly box fresh Toyota Tamaraw FX? We’re referring to the final model before it evolved into the Revo, and later on, the Innova. As utility vehicles, these lead a hard life, so seeing a clean and well-cared for example is hard to come by.
But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any shiny and well-sorted Tamaraw FX units out there. You’ll just have to search far and wide for them, which is why we’re quite happy to stumble upon this particular model from 1996.

This particular model is the 1.8 GL, so it’s the fancier version of this workhorse. It looks gloriously ’90s too thanks to the graphics on the side denoting its engine. In this case, it’s the tried and tested 1.8-liter 7K gas engine that’s only done 54,078kms in 29 years, at least according to the odometer.

There’s no variable valve timing or even fuel injectors here as fuel was fed from good ol’ carburetors. The engine was good for 80hp and 139Nm, and you can have any transmission you liked as long as it was a five-speed manual. Oh how far we’ve come since.

By the looks of it, this AUV looks more like a well-kept survivor than restored unit. There are hints of greyed-out trims on the outside that have been weathered by time, and there are a few dimples on the bodywork. Still, for something that was meant to be a workhorse, it still looks sharp. Also, those wheels take us back in time, along with those massive side mirrors that resemble elephant ears, and the sliding windows at the back.
The steering wheel and shifter have, er, shifted color through time, but one can call it patina. Its dashboard looks incredibly simple by today’s touchscreen-riddled interiors, but it’s also proof that not everything has to be complex or automated. This AUV’s charm lies in its simplicity and unpretentiousness, and we love it all the more for that. And let’s not forget that it was a true ten-seater thanks to the bench seat in front and long jump seats at the back, and that dual-aircon arrangement was a hit with everyone.

At the time of writing, this 1996 Toyota Tamaraw FX GL 1.8 is listed for P320,000. Surely, there are some folks out there it’s too expensive for a 29-year old vehicle that might be considered crude by today’s standards. Here’s the thing, though: we spoke to the seller and there’s a buyer ready to pick it up. Okay, price of nostalgia isn’t always a bargain, but the you can’t put a price on the joy it brings.
