In a refreshing break from the usual display, Peugeot Philippines gave 2016 Manila International Auto Show visitors more stuff to ogle beyond the stunning 308 GTi hatchback. Peugeot created a mini museum in its floor space that showcased its heritage and origins.
French Ambassador Thierry Mathou graced the occasion and was among those who cut the ceremonial ribbon. In keeping with the mood of the event, Peugeot Philippines president Glen Dasig even gave part of his welcome speech in French--with subtitles, of course.
Since it’s impossible to visit France and not do some shopping, Peugeot also had a La Boutique setup, where visitors could purchase miniatures, apparel and the world-famous salt-and-pepper grinders. We heard the items were a hit with the crowd.
In the end, it was the car that gearheads appreciated the most. The 308 GTi is a turbocharged hot hatch that derives 270hp from its 1.6-liter engine. It has a familiar checkerboard grille, GTi logos on the front wings, aerodynamic reflectors, and a to-see-is-to-believe two-tone red-and-black color scheme. Only a carmaker with a bold design ethos would dare render an automobile like this.
Amid the bustle of blaring booths and bright displays, Peugeot’s area was an oasis of class and charm. Just like its cars.
