It was nine years ago when Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) first breached the 100,000 sales mark. Not even a decade later, that number has doubled. The exact figure is 200,031 units. You can almost feel the collective effort of TMP’s sales department to cross the 200k threshold and deliver a record-breaking 2023 for the Japanese carmaker.

The number itself is staggering to comprehend. On average this means TMP sold 16,669 cars per month last year. Or roughly 548 vehicles per day. If the Vios, the best-selling model with 37,971 sedans sold, were its own brand, it would be the third biggest car brand in the country in terms of sales.

Interestingly, TMP’s market share has actually shrunk year-on-year from 49.38% of the market to a 46.54% share. The automotive market as a whole has gotten bigger. Indeed the tally from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) indicates that our market surged from 352,596 vehicles sold in 2022 to 429,807 last year. Now the extra heavy holiday traffic makes more sense.

How did TMP reach this sales milestone? For one it has a more comprehensive lineup than ever. Back in 2015, TMP was already moving more than 33,000 Vios units annually, and that year it sold 124,426 vehicles. In eight years Vios sales grew 14%, but overall sales grew 60% in the same time period. TMP’s deep and diverse lineup now has clearly paid off.

Here’s the complete model-by-model breakdown of TMP’s record year, ranked according to units sold:

Vios - 37,971
Hilux - 25,958
Raize - 17,504
Innova - 16,728
Hiace - 15,017
Wigo - 14,676
Fortuner - 13,971
Veloz - 13,672
Avanza - 13,458
Rush - 9,437
Yaris Cross - 5,353
Lite Ace - 3,976
Corolla Cross - 3,366
Land Cruiser - 2,199
Zenix - 1,629
Corolla - 951
Camry - 690
Alphard - 618
RAV4 - 577
Coaster - 161
GR Yaris - 103
GR 86 - 92
FJ Cruiser - 68
Supra - 13
*Lexus - 1,843

*These are counted in the tally since Lexus is under TMP.

Some notes:
- Veloz and Avanza sales are practically split. Buyers must find them equally appealing.
- Interesting to see some FJ Cruisers were still sold.
- Looks like the Yaris Cross is a hit, having sold 5,353 units already despite only being launched last August.
- That’s a lot of LCs, and demand is far from sated.
