Nissan has been pulling all the stops in its fight for survival. Aside from a slew of all-new models in the coming years, the embattled Japanese automaker has been cutting costs in as many areas as possible.

During its financial report, Nissan reported a net loss of ¥670.9 billion, along with a net income loss of approximately ¥1.1 billion for the financial year 2024. If that’s not a reason to start pinching pennies, we don’t know what will.

As a result, the company announced that it will be closing down seven major production lines. It’s not just vehicle assembly that will be affected, but also parts production. On top of that, it has scrapped its plans to build an EV battery plant in Southwestern Japan to save the company ¥160 billion, and it will cut 20,000 jobs instead of the initial 9,000 planned in its previous announcement.

Now, there are reports from Japan saying that Nissan might sell its headquarters for cash infusion. Nikkei Asia claims that the company placed the Yokohama headquarters among the assets possibly for sale be March 2026. If so, it should give Nissan a financial boost to the tune of ¥100 billion.

With a goal of saving ¥500 billion for financial year 2025, getting a fifth of that through the sale of the building is a huge deal. But what happens to Nissan employees if it’s sold? Besides, it’s counterproductive to build another building if the original aim was to save money.

A possible scenario is that the building will be sold with office spaces leased to tenants. From there, Nissan will simply rent instead of dealing with all the overhead of running and maintaining the building.

Of course, these are just possibilities, and we won’t know the final say until Nissan makes an official announcement.
