Last week, we reported that Mercedes-Benz was set to reveal its "latest Mercedes-AMG model," which we guessed would be the Black Series variant of the SLS AMG. And indeed it is.
Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 race car that debuted last month, the fifth Black Series model from Mercedes-AMG "boasts a fascinating mix of breathtaking design, outstanding driving dynamics, and uncompromising lightweight construction in accordance with the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy."
With its curb weight of 1,550kg and a 6.3-liter V8 engine that puts out 631hp and 635Nm of torque, the SLS AMG Black Series has a power-to-weight ratio of 2.45kg/hp. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 3.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 315kph. According to Mercedes-Benz, the only car more powerful than the SLS AMG Black Series in its lineup is the SLS AMG Electric Drive, which produces 740hp and 1,000Nm.
To further improve the car's handling to complement its significantly more powerful engine, AMG also gave the SLS AMG Black Series its coil-over Ride Control performance suspension; a ceramic high-performance composite brake system; a set of weight-optimized forged light-alloy wheels with newly developed sports tires; an electronically controlled, rear-axle differential lock; and the SpeedShift seven-speed, dual-clutch sports transmission. The availability of the optional AMG aerodynamics package could only further boost the car's driving dynamics.
"The new SLS AMG Black Series is a perfect study in the 100-percent transfer of technology and engineering from motorsports to the road," said Mercedes-AMG chairman Ola Kallenius. "We have drawn inspiration from the worldwide success of the SLS AMG GT3 on both conceptual and technological levels. Boasting numerous lightweight components and fantastic driving dynamics, our fifth Black Series model guarantees pure, unadulterated driving performance. The SLS AMG Black Series is the ultimate choice for fast laps and highly emotional driving experiences."
According to Mercedes-Benz, the SLS AMG Black Series is scheduled to hit the market in June 2013.
