The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) had to pause its infrastructure projects when the COVID-19 outbreak hit the Philippines a few months back.
Now, along with the declaration of the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) to be implemented in Metro Manila, the agency has been given the green light to resume some of its operations across the metro. Granted, of course, that all the safety guidelines and protocols laid out by the government for operations under MECQ shall be followed. (For more details on that, check out our explainer)
As of this writing, operations at the Estrella-Pantaleon and Binondo-Intramuros bridges have already restarted. Meanwhile, the DPWH is making the necessary preparations to continue the construction of the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road and the Sta. Monica-Lawton projects. You can check out the DPWH’s official announcement below.
San Miguel Corporation also announced earlier today that it will resume works on the Skyway Extension Project tomorrow, May 15. No word yet when other big-ticket projects such as the Skyway Stage 3 will resume construction.
So, motorists and commuters—any thoughts? Do you think this is a step in the right direction for the DPWH? Sound off in the comments.
