When is the fare hike taking effect?
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) just approved the fare hike for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), and it will take effect on April 2. This doesn’t exactly come as entirely new developments, as the possible fare hike was already reported at the start of this year.
How much is the LRT-1 fare increase?

The LRT-1 boarding fare will go up to P16.25 with a distance fare of P1.47 per kilometer. To simplify, the minimum fare for all single-journey tickets will go up from P15 to P20, while the maximum fare will shoot up from P45 to P55. As for stored-value cards, the minimum fare will go up from P15 to P16 and maximum fare from P43 to P52.
“The newly approved fare scheme is lower than the 2024 rates applied for by LRMC and is only equal to the 2022 LRMC application as provided for in the concession agreement,” said Light Rail Manila Corporation president Enrico Benipayo.

Why is there an LRT-1 fare hike?
According to Benipayo, LRMC has racked up P2.17 billion in fare deficits since 2016. Over the past nine years, it has also accumulated about P45 billion in investments. Increasing the LRT-1 fare will help the company recover from these expenditures.
