It hasn’t been such a beautiful start to this year in the realm of motoring, so it seems. In the past week alone, a couple of erring drivers on the EDSA Busway went viral and Davao City was reported to have the worst traffic in the Philippines with Metro Manila still right up there with it.
But apart from those, another incident also made the rounds on social media recently: This one involving a traffic enforcer in Bulacan that was run over by a Toyota Avanza. The enforcer Salvador Marquez Dela Cruz Jr. was left severely injured. The motorist, meanwhile, surrendered to the police after what happened.
Unfortunately for him, he won’t only have to answer to criminal charges but will also have to face consequences from the Land Transportation Office (LTO), which has now issued a show-cause order against the driver and the legal owner of the vehicle involved in the incident.

The Toyota Avanza was identified with the plate NIO 3457. Both the driver and the registered owner are now being asked to explain in writing why they should not be liable for what happened to traffic enforcer Dela Cruz.
“Based on the initial investigation, the driver of the vehicle fell asleep while driving and this resulted in this unfortunate incident,” said LTO chief Atty. Vigor Mendoza II. “We already issued a Show Cause Order (SCO) against both the driver and the owner of the vehicle as part of the due process, the intention is to get their side before we decide on the matter.”
In hindsight, all of this could have been avoided had the driver not fallen asleep behind the wheel. Let this also serve as a reminder to all motorists that no matter the hurry, it’s still best to stop and rest once you start dozing off while driving. Forcing it will never be worth the risk.
