The local government of Marikina City has broken ground on a new ‘Active Transport’ park, located in Barangay Marikina Heights. Once complete, it will feature a skate and bicycle motocross (BMX) area, a separate space for pets, end-of-trip facilities with shower areas, and outdoor exercise equipment.

Overall, the Marikina Active Transport Park will span 1,000sqm across its multiple segments. It is unclear when the park will officially open, but construction kicked off on June 19.

Food stalls will also be regularly available, along with dedicated grounds for community activities. Mayor Maan Teodoro of Marikina City emphasized that no trees will be cut for this new project.

It’s always good to see cities invest in more public spaces and alternative forms of mobility. The park has been endorsed by the Department of Transportation, marking its latest collaboration with Marikina City.

Before this, the agency opened a modernized PUV stop in the city, featuring charging outlets for small devices, a bike-repair station, new bench seats, and mobility guides specific to Marikina.

With these additional components, ordinary waiting sheds turn into much more functional spaces for commuters, cyclists, and pedestrians. Each of these new PUV stops is solar-powered, and we can expect to see more across the country.
