BYD Cars Philippines and ACMobility have just opened interest checks on a new Seal 5 DM-i. The plug-in hybrid sedan first debuted in November 2024, and we could see the next-generation model very soon.

Based on the teaser image, it dons a new design with more Sealion 6-like styling. The curved headlights with the sloping nose make up the fascia, and there seem to be new wheels as well. It now looks more akin to the fully electric Seal sedan, but with significant differences under the hood.

According to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) database of recognized electric vehicles, the new Seal 5 DM-i will be equipped with a familiar 1.5-liter generator but it will be paired with a smaller 7.42kWh battery. For context, today’s entry-level Seal 5 DM-i Dynamic uses an 8.3kWh battery. However, we shouldn’t worry, as performance and driving range may actually improve on this new Seal 5.

In 2025, when this version of the sedan was launched in China, it reportedly returned around 2,000km in driving range. And yes, that was delivered with this smaller powertrain. However, according to the DOE, the new Seal 5 is rated for only 55km of fully electric driving, but that’s still an improvement from the current Dynamic model’s 50km range.

Advancements aside, we can also expect the Seal 5 to remain competitively priced. Official prices have yet to be revealed. It will likely debut alongside the subcompact Atto 2 crossover, which will come in a DM-i configuration. Both nameplates are expected to be available in at least two variants, with varying battery sizes and interior features.

It looks like the market is about to be spoiled for options once again with BYD. Make sure to watch this space for the latest updates.
