Commuters can catch free rides on the MRT-3 every Wednesday this August. Specifically, the train line’s libreng sakay program commenced this week on August 6, and will continue to be in effect on August 13, 20, and 27, from 9am to 11am and from 6pm to 8pm.
To avail themselves of a free ride, commuters need to present their PhilSys National ID to the security officers at the station service gate. Both physical and digital ID cards are accepted, and commuters can also present a printed paper copy in case they haven’t received their cards yet.

Those without a National ID can apply for one through the eGovPH app or at certified registration booths throughout the country—these are usually found at government offices, malls, and other commercial centers.

The Department of Transportation has also been giving out free rides to MRT-3 commuters who have been wrongfully charged while using the new cashless turnstiles. Despite these birthing pains, more cashless turnstiles are expected to be installed in all MRT-3 stations to speed up foot traffic and shorten queues for single-journey tickets.

Students, along with PWDs and senior citizens without the white-colored Beep Card, will still need to line up at the ticket office to avail of their 50% fare discount on single-journey tickets. Families availing of a 1+3 SJT Pamilya Pass will also need to line up.
And with the new Dalian train cars now on the tracks, the MRT-3 can accommodate even more passengers. Hopefully, the birthing pains will be over soon, and all commuters can enjoy a more efficient experience on the MRT-3.
