Remember last month when we wrote about a new public space designed to educate kids on road safety? It’s now officially open and will hopefully lead to more similar facilities in the country.
The Muntinlupa Road Safety Park was inaugurated on March 2, 2026. A joint project by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Muntinlupa City local government, it’s being touted as the first of its kind in the Philippines.

The park covers 3,140 sqm and is located in Tunasan Baywalk. As “a model infrastructure experience for the next generation of road users, it’s a miniaturized road network that boasts avenues, cycle lanes with classifications, sidewalks complete with pedestrian ramps, and even a public transport stop. Pedal go-karts and helmets are available to allow visiting children a firsthand experience of operating a ‘vehicle’ on the road, following traffic rules, and being mindful of other road users.

The facility also features a road signage park, a stage area, and a viewing deck.
“Ang parating utos po sa atin ng Pangulo ay siguraduhin po nating ligtas ang ating kalsada, hindi lang po sa lahat ng mga motorista o sa mga pedestrian pero sa lahat ng tao sa lansangan,” said Secretary Giovanni Lopez of the DOTr.

The DOTr official release adds that road crash data from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) “consistently points to human error as the primary cause of road incidents, which makes it “very crucial to start road safety education early among children.”
“Hindi po naging kultura ng mga Pilipino ang road safety,” Lopez added. “Kaya ako po ay sumasang-ayon kay Mayor Ruffy Biazon [of Muntinlupa City]. Sa umpisa palang, bilang kasama ng curriculum ng mga bata ay dapat meron nang pag-aaral. Dapat kasama na yan sa mga dini-discuss sa ating paaralan.”

Biazon, meanwhile, thanked the agency for the partnership. “Well, we are very thankful for their support at maganda ang naging direction ng DOTr, which is toward active mobility at tsaka road safety dahil yan ang tawag ng panahon. Gone are the days na car-centric tayo.”
Also expressing support for the project were advocacy groups AltMobility PH, Commuters 4 Change, and Barangay Organization of Persons with Disabilities. “Ang lansangan natin ay may puwang para sa lahat ng road users, lalo sa mga vulnerable road users, katulad ng pedestrians, persons with disabilities, at bike users,” said Toix Cerna, convenor of Commuters for Change. “So as we teach our children the road safety ethics, we should also teach them their rights.”
