The Department of Public Works and Highways has reported the completion and opening of the General Santos (Gensan) Underpass in Barangay Mabuhay, General Santos City. The DPWH says that the Gensan Underpass is expected to ease traffic congestion in Region 12.
According to DPWH secretary Vince Dizon, the Gensan Underpass’ construction has been delayed for five years, causing heavy traffic in the area. “Ang delay, hindi lang sa project, perwisyo sa tao ‘yun,” he said. Furthermore, the delay also contributed to losses, including business closures, said General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Miguel Rene Dominguez.
The underpass was officially opened on July 29, two days before the final deadline set by Dizon. The newly completed project is located along Mabuhay Road and can finally be used by motorists instead of traversing through the diversion routes that were set in 2022.

“Mula doon ang traffic, sobra talaga. Pagdating mo sa pupuntahan mo, ang dami nang oras ang nasayang mo,” said Dory Berdin, a local motorist. “Madali lang pala matapos, noong una, ang tagal. [Ngayon], ilang araw lang, nabuksan na. Ang saya.”
The Gensan Underpass opening was attended by Vince Dizon, Miguel Rene Dominguez, and General Santos City mayor Lorelie Pacquiao, along with other members of their respective teams.
