It’s not just NLEX Air that’s in the works for the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). Its operator NLEX Corporation has also shared that barrierless tollways are also now in the pipeline.

During the recently held Transport Con 2024, NLEX Corporation J Luigi Bautista also confirmed that the multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) system, or more easily recognizable as barrier-free tollways, is now set to be implemented on the northern expressways.

The barrierless system will address the perennial problem of traffic congestion at the toll plazas. In other countries with more advanced tollway systems, there are no toll plazas in sight. Instead, there are gantries by the entry and exit points that facilitate the electronic toll fee-collection process.

In the case of NLEX, the MLFF system will utilize efficiency antennae and RFID sensors, automatic license-plate recognition (ALPR) and infrared technology, artificially intelligence, and machine learning.

NLEX Corporation has also determined other use cases for this system, such as predicting traffic congestion patterns, detecting speeding, anticipating driving violations such as swerving or illegal parking, and identifying accident-prone areas on the road network.

There is no specific timeline yet as to when this will be implemented, but the company did share that it will be available in the coming years. What say you, motorists? How do you think this will affect traffic on the expressway?
