The EDSA Rehabilitation Project had the right intentions and goals in mind, but higher-ups might have deemed it too premature or felt it was rushed, which was why the government eventually suspended the program. And since it was binned, we’ve yet to see the concerned agencies come up with something as drastic as that project.
Perhaps tired of sitting on their hands and waiting for someone to do something, Move As One Coalition is now somewhat taking matters into its own hands. It has now launched a Rebuild EDSA Design Challenge, wherein the winning concept will win P100,000. Yes, this is now an actual thing, and it’s real.

“EDSA is getting rebuilt. This is our chance to make it work for people, not just cars,” the Facebook post reads. “Have ideas on how we can rebuild EDSA to be safe, inclusive, and dignified for the thousands who walk, bike, and commute every day?”
There are three areas that have been specified for design: EDSA corner Congressional Avenue, EDSA corner Aurora Boulevard, and MRT Guadalupe Station. These sites were identified as key feeder routes with high daily foot traffic and strategic in improving accessibility and multimodal transport on EDSA.
All submissions must cover all three areas, and each one should cover at least 100 meters of the corridor per site. There is no limit, though, so designs could be as broad as possible for a bigger impact.
The contest will run until August 24, 2025 at 11:59pm, and until then, interested groups or individuals can join through this link.
“While we understand that the whole stretch of EDSA needs attention, we’re starting with just these three areas due to the limited time for the challenge. These sites will serve as starting points to test ideas that can be improved and expanded in the future.”
What a concept, eh? Who knows, these guys might be onto something. Rest assured, we’ll also be waiting for what winning design comes out of this contest. Watch this space, folks.
