More changes could be coming to Formula 1, as Bloomberg reports that BYD has shown interest in joining the historic racing tournament. The 2026 season kicked off on March 8 with several teams returning with new partners, sponsors, and drivers.

In future seasons, BYD could further shake things up as the powertrain partner of an existing team, or as a completely new unit altogether. Both pathways seem reasonably plausible, especially with the tournament’s continued focus on electrification.

Bloomberg also mentions that the Chinese carmaker is entertaining the possibility of entering the World Endurance Championship as well. We’re surprised that Formula E doesn’t seem to be on BYD’s radar; the e-racing series is a good place to develop its goundbreaking U9 even further.

With a healthy mix of Japanese, American, Italian, and German engineering this season, having a Chinese competitor sounds like an obvious addition. The president of the International Automobile Federation, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has even confirmed its inevitability.

The Philippines has seen BYD’s rapid growth first-hand, after it sold over 26,000 cars in the last calendar year. And while growing locally, BYD continues to become a more global brand. It has even entered the world of English football as one of the headlining sponsors of Manchester City FC. Not to mention its foray into the Japanese domestic market.

Now, it only seems like a matter of time before BYD heads into motorsports, and at the top tier no less.
