McLaren has announced that it will compete in the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship, meaning it’ll return to the top class of endurance racing to take on Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, BMW, Alpine, Toyota, Ford and more at the Le Mans 24 hours. Oh yes.

Clearly the McLaren Racing media team had taken the day off ahead of the announcement, because its press release simply read: “1995. Legendary Le Mans victory. Triple Crown glory. Ready to make our mark on the world endurance stage once again. Hypercar. 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship.”

Of course, the beginning of that slightly staccato statement refers to the legendary Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing F1 GTR that took overall victory at Le Mans in 1995. There’s been no confirmation on what form McLaren’s contender will take this time around, but rumor is it’ll be built to the LMDh regulations and could use the twin-turbo V6 from the Artura paired with the standardized hybrid system.

“We’re back,” said Zak Brown, boss of McLaren Racing. Reckon it’ll replicate its pace in F1 in the World Endurance Championship?
