When Toyota Motor Philippines introduced the first hybrid electric vehicle in the country back in 2009, it was all alone in the electrified category. There were still a lot of customer questions about the technology, and many took the safe route and purchased traditional Fortuners, Innovas, and Corollas—nothing wrong with that, too. Many people were still wary about new technology, and craved the comfort and predictability of just gassing up their Toyota and starting the reliable engine every morning.
But in a span of a decade, the Philippine automotive industry experienced a tectonic shift in the landscape. From a handful of familiar brands and models, the market exploded with a plethora of new badges and vehicle designs.
Come 2026, the local market is inundated with electrified models from many marques, and buying a hybrid or an EV has become the trend. And there are many reasons for opting to go hybrid: fuel economy, special incentives, smooth operation, and a quiet drive.
Video and events director Paolo ‘Apags’ Apagalang is a loyal, traditional Toyota customer. He previously owned a Fortuner, and he enjoyed the ownership experience like many Toyota owners—especially the easy availability of spare parts, no matter which dealership he went to.

With the Zenix, I’m averaging close to 13-15km/L.”
Apags is also glad he already owned a Zenix by the time the fuel crisis hit a few months ago. He says his family really saved a lot during that period.
Of course, when owning a modern vehicle with all the new bells and whistles, there can be a period of adjustment. But according to Apags, the Zenix helped him adjust easily: “Some of the features were very foreign to me, but it only took a few minutes and several tries for me to figure out the different features. As a video and events director, and a businessman catering to different kinds of pets, he thinks the Zenix’s cargo space is fantastic. “You can place different-size pet containers, pet supplies, and pet food in the back. It’s very easy to fold the seats up if you need extra space,” he says. “We have five small dogs, and we can keep them cool for as long as we’re driving.”
Less than a year into his ownership journey, Apags can confirm he has made the right choice. “We’re happy with the fuel economy, we’re happy with the comfortable ride, and we’re happy that we have a vehicle that will last us many years to come,” shares the undoubtedly happy hybrid Toyota owner. “It’s a great one-car garage solution for me.”
