We recently reported about the next GR86 gaining additional body styles. According to Best Car, the next generation of Toyota’s small rear-wheel-drive coupe may be joined by a four-door coupe or sedan and a wagon. Based on that info, we decided to render our own version of the supposed future four-door GR86 using the Japanese carmaker’s new design language.
The car’s silhouette was the first thing I worked on—I needed the right balance of sporty without sacrificing too much of its functionality as a four-door sedan. Being a rear-drive car, I kept the current GR86’s long-sloping hood and cab-rearward proportions. Its sleek fastback roofline gives it a sporty shape without eating too much of the rear passenger’s headroom.

Up front, I gave it a version of Toyota’s new corporate face for its cars. What’s perfect about this design? If you squint, it looks like a sleeker modern version of the AE86 Trueno’s front. Sadly, no pop-up headlights because modern safety regulations won’t allow them. It gets a GR-style grille flanked by slim vertical air curtain openings on each corner.
Moving to the sides, it gets prominent wheel arches that accentuate the car’s wide tracks. Front fender vents help lessen the air turbulence in the wheel wells. Like before, the side mirrors are mounted on the doors to improve outward visibility. At the back, it features horizontal taillights linked by a light bar. At the bottom, it has a small diffuser flanked by exhaust tips.
4-door Toyota GR86 rear

How big is our four-door GR86? It measures 4,520mm long, 1,841mm wide, and 1,369mm tall. It rides on a 2,744mm wheelbase. It’s equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 235/40 R18 rubber, the same size as the tires mounted on the all-wheel-drive GR Corolla.
Will the next GR86 keep its naturally aspirated 2.4-liter Subaru boxer engine? Will it get the turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-banger used by the GR Yaris and GR Corolla? Will any of its powerplants be electrified? It’s still too early to tell. For my ideal four-door GR86, it would have a 270 to 300 horsepower G16E-GTS turbo in-line-three paired with a six-speed manual transmission. While a high-revving NA engine would be great, we must also remember that the larger four-door body will be heavier than the current GR86 Coupe.
What do you think of our four-door GR86? Would you consider one if it looked like the car in our renderings? Let us know in the comments.
