Remember how some people were confused when car manufacturers started equipping their products with dials and buttons instead of shift knobs and brake levers? Quite a few purists were up in arms about it.

We ask because Audi has just released interior images of the RS Q e-Tron it’s fielding for next year’s Dakar Rally, and well, the images speak for themselves. Look:

Frankly, this reminds us as much of an airplane’s cockpit as it does a car. We’d probably take quite a while finding our way inside this thing—though we reckon we’d be good as soon as we get a foot on a pedal and find the ignition.

As for what to make of all the buttons and gizmos seen here? Let’s do a quick rundown first. There are eight control buttons on the steering wheel that handle basics like the horn and wipers. Behind that is a driver display for tire pressure, drive, and navigation information. And a switch panel chock-full of touch-sensitive keys with up to 24 assigned tasks—everything from selecting maximum speeds to an emergency mode—is there as well. Oh, and all this must be juggled at speeds of up to 170kph on rough terrain.

Let’s just say Audi’s probably thankful they won’t be relying on us to drive this baby to the finish line come January 2022. That duty will fall on the shoulders of Mattias Ekström, Stéphane Peterhansel, and Carlos Sainz, who’re well versed in the art of operating machines of this nature.
