Unless you live in Europe, the station wagon is pretty much a niche segment these days. It’s been displaced by the crossover and MPV as the family car of choice. Totally understandable why that’s happened, but there’s something about wagons that holds a special appeal.
That brings us neatly to the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring. It’s the Chinese automaker’s first-ever station wagon, and it’s aimed squarely at the European market. Of course, it’s also available in its home market, and we got the chance to get up close to it.

In the metal, it’s deceivingly compact, but the tale of the tape reveals a length of over 4,800mm long. That makes it longer than something like a BMW 3-Series Touring, and a hair smaller than a Mazda 6 Sport Wagon. So, have a general idea about its size? Good.

But where it isn’t seemingly compact is on the inside. It’s properly spacious in there, and we were genuinely surprised by the legroom at the back. But it’s the cargo area that’s the main highlight. On paper, it’s listed at 675 liters, and after seeing it in person, it’s very believable. We particularly like the long floor in this wagon.

Powertrain specs? The entry-level model uses a 1.5-liter engine mated to a single motor and a 10.08kWh battery, much like the Seal 5 DM-i. It’s good for 161hp and an estimated battery-only range of 80km. The second option has the same configuration as the base version, but packs a more powerful motor and a 15.87kWh battery. The result is 215hp and a battery-only range of 120km. Both variants can go over 1,000km on a single tank.
But the kicker here is the pricing. In China, the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring carries a base price of about RMB110,000, and goes up to RMB130,000. In local context, that’s a range of P890,000 to just under P1.050 million.
Tempting, isn’t it? The question now is whether BYD Cars Philippines will even consider this model for the country. And while it’s a niche product, there is some clamor for it. For now, let’s wait and see, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
