The arrival of the BYD Tang DM-i has revitalized the brand’s Dynasty series, or its line of executive-styled vehicles. It also marks the arrival of turbo power to BYD’s DM-i range-extended hybrid system, as the Sealion 6, Sealion 5, and Seal 5 use naturally-aspirated engines to charge the onboard batteries.
Packaged with a wide frame and luxurious interior, the Tang DM-i is positioned at the top of its hybrid offerings—expected to give prospective Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento buyers a more premium and affordable option.

Variant and price of the BYD Tang DM-i

The new SUV comes in a single variant, priced at P2.098 million. It is spec’d similarly to other top-of-the-line BYD vehicles, or the ‘Advanced’ trims. This means the Tang DM-i is fully loaded with BYD’s advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), DiPilot, and all the other bells and whistles—more on that later.
Exterior of the BYD Tang DM-i

Its fascia is tied together by a long strip of metal with a BYD logo placed in the middle, similar to what you’d find on the Sealion 5 DM-i. DRLs then segment off the strip to outline the headlights to round out the front. The grille then follows a scale or feather-like pattern with a rather large block in the center, which houses a camera as part of the DiPilot ADAS suite.
Around back, a thick taillight stretches across the gate with minimal BYD branding right underneath. From end-to-end, the Tang DM-i comes in at 4,870mm long, 1,950mm wide, and 1,725mm tall. The wheelbase comes in at 2,820mm, with the car sitting on 20-inch alloys shod in 255/50R20 tires. With no cargo and passengers, it then has a 182mm ground clearance.
In terms of colorways, the Tang DM-i is available in Moon Stone Grey, Silver Sand Black, and Pearl White.
Interior of the BYD Tang DM-i
The Tang DM-i seats seven passengers in a cabin mostly dressed in black and grey leather. The driver and front passenger seats can be heated and ventilated, with power eight-way and four-way adjustment, respectively. In the back, the bench seat in the second row seats three with 60:40 folding, and the third row has space for two passengers and can fully fold down.
Around back, the cargo area can fit 1,655 liters with all rear seats folded down, and about 940 liters with just the third row collapsed. If all seats are up, cargo capacity is listed at 235 liters.
Up front, a 15.6-inch infotainment display sits next to a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and outputs sound to a 12-speaker system from Dynaudio. The cockpit also holds a wireless charging pad, one USB-A port, another USB-C port, and a 12V charger. Two more USB ports and another 12V outlet can be found on the second row.
Engine and specs of the BYD Tang DM-i

As mentioned, the Tang nameplate is the first of BYD’s DM-i stable to make use of a turbocharged engine as a battery generator. Dubbed Super DM-i Technology, the powertrain comprises a 1.5-liter turbo generator and a permanent magnet synchronous motor powered by a 21.5kWh battery.
Combined, it makes 267hp and 315Nm of torque, with a fully electric driving range of 110km—though, on a full tank and battery, it’s advertised with over 1,000km of driving. It then tops out at 200kph, with a 0-100kph sprint of just 7.5sec.
Extra features of the BYD Tang DM-i

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on the Tang DM-i, while the DiPilot ADAS suite makes use of a 360-degree camera system and an eight-sensor radar setup. This fires off signals to engage functions like adaptive cruise control, collision warnings, lane departure assist, and the automatic braking system.
The Tang DM-i also has Vehicle-2-Load (V2L) capabilities, which can output power to appliances and devices with the use of the included V2L adapter.
