Even Formula 1 engineers have faith in the power of duct tape

This year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix wasn’t as controversial as the last one, but there was still a fair bit of drama in Baku this weekend. It wasn’t just Red Bull’s growing lead or Ferrari’s continuous heartbreaks that made the headlines, though—AlphaTauri’s uncanny engineering also had its share of the limelight.

On Lap 39, the rear wing of Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri suddenly snapped in half after the car exited a corner and picked up speed into a straight. Immediately after, the commentators said: “That has to be retired.” But the engineers had other plans, as they duct-taped the wing back into place on the succeeding pit stop. Look:

Luckily for AlphaTauri, the duct tape did manage to hold the wing up until the end, as Tsunoda was still able to finish the Azerbaijan GP—that’s something Ferrari wasn’t able to do this year, despite claiming a dominant pole position the day before. Maybe the Scuderia can take some notes here?
