Unlike cars, pickup trucks aren’t redesigned every five years. It usually takes nearly a decade before an all-new model arrives. Which is why it’s a huge deal every time one is launched.

This year, it’s the Mitsubishi Triton that takes the limelight. The all-new pickup is no facelift, either. It has been re-engineered from bumper to bumper, ready to take on the pickup wars of this decade.

Variants and prices

Mitsubishi Triton 2024

For the Philippine market, the Triton is only available in one body style, the dual-cab. That said, there are seven variants to choose from. It kicks off with the utilitarian GL. The GL can be paired with either two-wheel drive of four-wheel drive. The lone transmission option for this variant is a six-speed manual.

Up next is the GLX also with either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The GLX 2WD can be ordered with a manual or an automatic, while the GLX 4WD is exclusively automatic.

The range-topping 2WD variant is dubbed the GLS. This variant has most of the goodies seen in higher-spec models, and the only transmission for it is a six-speed automatic. Lastly, there’s the Athlete, the top dog of the Triton lineup.

Exterior

In terms of dimensions, the Triton measures 5,320mm long, 1,865mm wide, 1,775mm tall. It then rides on a longer 3,130mm wheelbase. Meanwhile, bed size is at 1,555mm long, 1,545mm wide, and 525mm tall, one of the largest in its segment. Payload capacity ranges from 985kg to 1,115kg, depending on the variant.

All Tritons feature Mitsubishi’s latest take on the Dynamic Shield design language. There’s a bolder and wider grille, along with its two-tier light design. Fenders are more flared out than before while the flanks get defined character lines.

GL models ride on steel rims while the rest come with alloys. GL and GLX variants use halogen headlights while the GLS and Athlete come equipped with LEDs standard.

Interior

Like the exterior, the cabin gets a boxier and more angular look. The dash has a flat fascia with soft padding (depending on the variant) and a wide ‘floating’ infotainment screen. Most variants get a single-tone interior, while the Athlete comes exclusive with leather and suede combination seats with orange highlights.

Thanks to the extended wheelbase, there is more room inside the new Triton. Interior materials are also much improved, and the multi-information display is standard for most models.

Engine and specs

Mitsubishi Triton 2024

The Philippine-spec Triton is available with two engine options. From the GL to the GLS, the pickup uses a new 2.4-liter MIVEC turbodiesel making 181hp and 430Nm of torque. The Athlete is the only variant that gets twin-turbo MIVEC turbodiesel producing 201hp and 470Nm of torque. Drivetrain options include both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive layouts.

For those who plan to go off-road, they’ll be pleased to know that it has 222mm of ground clearance available. Wading capacity is rated at 800mm, on par with most rivals.

Extra features

Mitsubishi Triton 2024

For the Athlete model, it has Mitsubishi’s suite of advanced driver assist technologies. It includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and rear cross traffic alert, just to name a few.

Other goodies in the top-spec variant? There, Super Select 4WD II with seven drive modes, seven airbags (the rest get three), Active Yaw Control, and 360-degree view camerasRear-locking differentials are standard in the Athlete and GLX 4WD.
