Can you believe it’s been 20 years since Pimp My Ride first aired on MTV? Yup, 2004 was that long ago, practically spawning a whole new genre of car customization shows on TV.
Pimp My Ride was on air for three years before it was cancelled (no, not in that way) in 2007. In all those years, it was hosted by none other than hip hop artist Xzibit.

There have been several reboot attempts over the years following the original show’s cancellation. However, it’s difficult to capture the campiness and outrageousness of the American version. Xzibit’s hosting chops were the right amount of over the top (even if it was scripted), and the folks from West Coast Customs (later at Galpin Auto Works or GAS) brought in the more, um, entertainment.
17 years since the last episode aired, it looks like Pimp My Ride is coming back. Not only that, the hint of its reboot was made public by Xzibit on his Instagram page. ‘It’s time to get back to customizing cars,’ says the caption, along with its possible air date, May 9, 2024.

Okay, it doesn’t outright say Pimp My Ride in the post, so the celebrations might be premature. Still, it came from the original host, so we can’t blame anyone for concluding it might by a reboot of the show. There are also several questions at the moment, too.
For instance, the network that will show it is still yet to be determined. At the same time, the shop that will customize the cars are unknown. Heck, we don’t even know the official name of the show.
Still, we’re hoping it’s a reboot of Pimp My Ride. Perhaps less on the outlandish and outrageous mods and something that’s, er, more tastefully done for the 2020s. Then again, we wouldn’t mind if the show triggers core memories of us playing Need For Speed Underground 2 and slapping on rather questionable kits and wheels.
