"Eat, Play, Drive Australia" was the name of this event, and unlike the usual ride-and-drive programs that we attend, we could go at our own pace and take in the sights at our own leisure.
The Ford Focus, our steed for this picturesque program, punches above its weight and can hold its own with ease. Two days of enthusiastic driving and I had to keep reminding myself that under the hood is a 1.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine. The power delivery could have fooled me into thinking there was bigger displacement at my disposal. Imagine, all 178hp and 240Nm from a relatively small engine. It really is an enthusiast's machine.
We started our drive in the suburbs and ended along the coast. We then entered the Royal National Park with its smooth asphalt that snakes on forever. This was perfect for the nimble Focus, which has always been a joy to drive when the road gets twisty. It must be the rally-bred genes that are still so evident in the current iteration of the car. The event was capped by a wet slalom and some car-handling antics.
