You’ve probably read about electric vehicle owners turning their units into mobile generators during power outages. But an entire hotel powered by an EV? This might be a first.
In the UK, an entire resort is operating powered solely by Hyundai Ioniq 5 units. The establishment is aptly named Hotel Hyundai and is situated just about one hour away from Central London.

Now before anything else, something needs to be disclosed here: Hotel Hyundai isn’t exactly as much of a hotel as you might think. The establishment centers around just a luxury cabin, but features amenities like a cinema, bar, and restaurant.
The main cabin features “everything guests can expect from a luxury boutique hotel,” Hyundai says. There’s also an outdoor deck with a cozy-looking lounge area, as well as plenty of string lighting. The bar and restaurant, meanwhile, boasts an “innovative and sustainable” menu with locally-sourced ingredients and an espresso lounge. Lastly, the cinema is made possible by a “car-powered” projector and speaker setup. It even comes with a popcorn machine. Nice.

Again, all of this is powered by the Hyundai Ioniq 5’s V2L (that’s vehicle-to-load) capability.
“We’re looking for unique, memorable stays more now than ever and this is a delicious blend of innovation, luxury, and comfort that gets you thinking. With power coming from the car, where could Hotel Hyundai pop up next?” Grace Dent, the hotel’s curator, said in a statement.

“I hope this three-week pop-up hotel is just the start for this concept of a car plugging in and powering a luxury experience like this. I’m predicting that guests will be hoping that his amazing hotel and the full experience it offers might be here again in 2023.”
So yeah, your EV’s battery can power up more than your laptop and a bunch of smartphone chargers in the event you lose power. Would you be willing to stay in a place like this?
